We’re excited to announce that GEAR Lab PhD student Binbin Lin has led a new publication in Annals of GIS, titled "Progress in Understanding Human-COVID-19 Dynamics Using Geospatial Big Data: A Systematic Review."
This paper synthesizes recent research on the interactions between human behavior and COVID-19 spread, using geospatial big data to track and assess responses to the pandemic.
The study analyzes 67 publications between March 2020 and January 2023, highlighting key findings on the impact of stay-at-home policies, regional mobility patterns, and the timing of public awareness relative to COVID-19 case surges. Results underscore the need for future research to develop models that capture the long-term, bidirectional relationships between human activity and pandemics. This work is a step forward in informing evidence-based, hyperlocal strategies for future pandemic response.
